Police summon 26 Turun protesters over rally

A total of 26 individuals involved in a recent anti-price hike rally have been called to Dang Wangi district police headquarters for investigation over their participation in Saturday’s protest.

The names comprised student activists, politicians, and members of Bersih and Suaram.

Notable figures include DAP’s Ketari assemblyperson Young Syefura Othman, PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Suaram executive director Sevan Doraisamy, Kapar MP Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid, and Bersih’s Edlyn Beverly Joeman.

Besides Adam and Sani, PKR Youth members - Mohd Afiq Ayob, Ng Yih Miin @ Bryan Ng, and Nur Farah Ariana Nurazam - were called up too.

Undi18 co-founders Nur Qyira Yusri and Tharma Pillai also joined the list of individuals named by the police today.

Further, members of Muda’s central executive committee were instructed to be present at the district headquarters.

They include former Muda secretary-general Amir Abdul Hadi, sec-gen Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz and party veep Dr Thanussha Francis Xavier, among several other party members.

The 26 are expected to be present in Dang Wangi at 2.30pm tomorrow (July 25) and the day after on July 26.

This came shortly after the group that calls itself the Turun Movement, gathered outside of the Sogo shopping complex yesterday demanding that Putrajaya springs into action to deal with the hike in prices of goods.

Their five demands to the government are: that ministers' pay is cut, government subsidies are continued, deliver decent assistance to the people, control prices of goods, and address the issue of food security.

Kuala Lumpur police have identified 30 of some 100 individuals linked to the rally for investigations under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 (PAA).

Dang Wangi district police chief Noor Dellhan Yahaya, in a statement released several hours after the rally, said all the individuals and others yet to be identified will be questioned under Section 9(5) of the PAA. - Mkini
