KUALA LUMPUR: Wanita Barisan Nasional (Wanita BN) has called for a 30% allocation of seats for women to be made a legal requirement for any political party wishing to contest a general election.

Wanita BN chairman Noraini Ahmad, speaking at the women’s wing congress today, urged the coalition to support a 30% quota for women, as the women’s wing had proven itself with its convincing victory at the recent Johor state elections.

“I am convinced that the women of BN are ready (for the general election),” Noraini said. She said she was confident that BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi would support the wing’s calls.

“It is also not too much to ask the government to amend the Federal Constitution to ensure that a party may only contest in a general election if at least 30% of its candidates are women,” she said.

Noraini, who is also Wanita Umno chief, said there remained much to be done to close the gender gap in the country, as women continue to lag behind in the workplace and the economy. She said BN had the chance to resolve this.

She added that it was important for BN to present a united front, across all its component parties and wings, including the women’s wing, to stand any chance of winning big at GE15.

At the Johor state elections in March, nine out of the 14 women candidates BN fielded succeeded in their contests.

Nor Rashidah Ramli and Rashidah Ismail retained their Parit Raja and Pasir Raja seats respectively.

The other BN women candidates who came out tops were Hasrunizah Hassan (Pulai Sebatang), Fauziah Misri (Penawar), Norlizah Noh (Johor Lama), Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain (Mahkota), Khairin-Nisa Ismail@ Md On (Serom), Haslinda Salleh (Tenang) and N Saraswati (Kemelah).

BN won a landslide victory in Johor, taking 40 out of the 56 state assembly seats, enabling it to form the state government with a two-thirds majority. - FMT
