UM lodges police report against PhD candidate

PETALING JAYA: Universiti Malaya (UM) has filed a police report against one of their international PhD candidates.

The candidate had earlier alleged that his research was taken by his supervisor without his permission.

The university’s Corporate Communications Office said that they are studying legal avenues they can take against the candidate.

“It is the university’s policy that research and scientific results are the property of the university,” it said in a statement Monday (Aug 29) night.

A PhD candidate from Yemen had reportedly made a police report against two of his supervisors from UM, alleging that they had used his research findings for their own commercial benefits.

He alleged that he was also expelled from the university.

UM said they had also given the candidate a three-semester extension beyond the 12 months during which he was supposed to have finished his PhD, with the fees sponsored by the faculty.

It said they had also given him additional counselling sessions and appointed another supervisor to help him.

“However, the candidate was still unable to complete his studies within the extension period given,” it added. - Star
