KUALA LUMPUR: Disciplinary action has been taken against the two traffic policemen who acted as outriders for an MP’s son in Penang in May, says home minister Hamzah Zainudin.

Hamzah said Penang police had opened a disciplinary investigation paper against the two traffic policemen for escorting the individual, believed to be the son of a Barisan Nasional (BN) MP.

“Police have also conducted a thorough investigation over the matter after a 20-second recording of the video had gone viral on social media since May 7.

“Action has been taken against the two traffic policemen under Rule 36 of the Public Officers (Conduct and Discipline) Regulations 1993,” he said in a written parliamentary reply to Steven Sim (PH-Bukit Mertajam).

Sim had asked about the status of the investigation and possible prosecution against the BN MP’s son.

Hamzah had previously said action could be taken against the MP’s son if the investigation showed he broke the law.

A 20-second clip of the incident showed a car driven by the MP’s son being escorted by two traffic policemen along Jalan Bukit Gambir in Penang. The driver, in his 20s, had given his statement to police.

Police had previously said the case would be investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA) 1998 because it involved the improper use of network facilities or network service.

On May 18, Penang police chief Shuhaily Zain said an investigation paper had been sent to the deputy public prosecutor for further action. - FMT
