Anwar looking for safer seat, fears PD folk’s rejection, says Faizal

Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu is the MP for Tambun, the parliamentary seat that PKR president Anwar Ibrahim is reported to be eyeing in GE15.

PETALING JAYA: PKR president Anwar Ibrahim may be considering contesting the Tambun parliamentary seat for fear of being rejected by voters in Port Dickson, says Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu.

Faizal, who is the Tambun MP, said this in response to reports that the opposition leader was considering contesting in Tambun, Perak, in the next general election (GE15).

“Perhaps they (PKR) believe that Port Dickson has developed and no longer has people in need of help.

“Or perhaps he is worried about being rejected in his constituency and believes it is safer to contest elsewhere,” Malaysiakini quoted Faizal as saying.

Yesterday, Anwar said he was considering a proposal for him to contest the Tambun seat in GE15. He said he had yet to decide as PKR’s focus was on the number of seats to contest and the party’s election machinery.

It was previously reported that Tambun PKR chief Arafat Varisai Mahamad wanted to make way for Anwar to contest the seat in GE15 and that this was agreed upon by party grassroots.

Faizal, who is also the youth and sports minister, won the seat in the last general election in 2018 under a Pakatan Harapan ticket, when Bersatu was still part of the coalition.

He defeated its then incumbent, Ahmad Husni Mohamad Hanadzlah of Umno, and also became the Perak menteri besar after winning the Chenderiang state seat. - FMT
