Tengku Zafrul’s BN switch shows PN reps losing faith, says Umno man

Finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz was appointed Selangor BN treasurer on Sunday.

PETALING JAYA: The move by finance minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz to join Barisan Nasional (BN) despite being appointed to his Cabinet post by Perikatan Nasional (PN) chief Muhyiddin Yassin shows that Muhyiddin’s elected representatives are worried about their future, says a Johor Umno leader.

Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed said this came about after PN’s representatives were rejected outright by voters in the recent Melaka and Johor state elections.

“These have had a deep impact on the confidence of many of the elected representatives from PN,” he said in a Facebook post.

“Some of whom have left the coalition while others are planning to ditch their parties as they are worried about losing their positions after the next general election (GE15).”

On Sunday, BN announced the appointment of Tengku Zafrul as its Selangor treasurer.

Nur Jazlan said the move by Tengku Zafrul to join BN “all of a sudden” after being brought in by Muhyiddin to helm the finance ministry showed his lack of confidence in the future of the coalition.

“PN’s performance in the Johor state election was quite telling when its component party, PAS, won only one seat while the lead party, Bersatu, lost eight of the 11 seats it held before the state assembly was dissolved,” he said.

He said the MPs and assemblymen from PN became more worried when political analysts started writing off the coalition as a serious contender in GE15 following the state elections.

As for PAS, the former Pulai MP said, it was a party which was capable of labelling a “haram” act “halal” if it meant furthering its own interests or when power and positions were threatened.

He said this was obvious in the way “opportunistic party leaders” kept changing their stand on the cooperation between the Islamic party and Umno in Muafakat Nasional (MN).

“It’s funny that the leaders suddenly bring up the issue of MN again after implying that the relationship is not working anymore,” he said.

“Its president, Abdul Hadi Awang, said a few days ago that the pact is not dead and they are ready to continue their cooperation with Umno. Why is Hadi suddenly raising the issue of MN again? Was he provoked by Umno MPs in Kelantan whose positions are being threatened?

“These elected representatives are desperate because they know that they can only retain their seats with the cooperation between Umno and PAS still intact in MN.”

Nur Jazlan said PAS, “as usual”, used race and religion to mislead the people by asking Umno to join MN and also accept PN.

“But their loyalty to Umno was exposed when they decided to be with the PN in Melaka,” he said.

He said this was why Umno leaders and members must not be fooled by the “playacting” by PAS and PN and the masterminds from Umno working with them, as the party could be destroyed.

“It’s an obvious move by Muhyiddin and his gang to use the Umno masterminds with them to perform a coup via the backdoor to control Umno. Beware (of) these wolves who can bury Umno,” he said. - FMT
