The United States House of Representatives speaker Nancy Pelosi’s two-day visit to Taiwan was a serious infringement on China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, said the Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia Ouyang Yujing.
The ambassador said the US has become "the biggest destroyer" to the peace of Taiwan Strait and the stability of the region as Pelosi’s visit sent a wrong signal to the "Taiwan independent" separatist forces.
He warned that those who play with fire will perish by it.
"This is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués. It has a severe impact on the political foundation of China-US relations and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
"It gravely undermines peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and sends a seriously wrong signal to the separatist forces for 'Taiwan independence'. China firmly opposes and sternly condemns this.
"There is but one China in the world, Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory, and the government of the People’s Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China," Ouyang said in a statement yesterday.
Status quo
He added that the Taiwan Strait is facing a new round of tensions and severe challenges, and the fundamental cause is the repeated moves by the Taiwan authorities and the US to change the status quo. The Taiwan authorities have kept seeking US support for their independence agenda.
"The United States, for its part, has been attempting to use Taiwan to contain China. It constantly distorts, obscures and hollows out the one-China principle, steps up its official exchanges with Taiwan and emboldens 'Taiwan independence' separatist activities.
"These moves, like playing with fire, are extremely dangerous. Those who play with fire will perish by it," Ouyang warned.
"China has repeatedly stated its strong opposition and serious representations to the US on Pelosi’s visit to China’s Taiwan region. Not only putting a deaf ear to China’s warnings, but the US also turned to blame China for intending to create a crisis out of this."
This fact-distorting and innocent-blaming way has been typical of and consistent with the US' unreasonable and domineering style of handling affairs with other countries in this region all the time, he said.
What the US has done once again tells the world that it has never cared for other countries, nor has it respected the common aspiration for peace and stability of the regional countries, he added.
“It cares nothing but its own interests. Actually, the US has become 'the biggest destroyer' to the peace of Taiwan Strait and the stability of the region," Ouyang added.
Pelosi, who kicked off her Asia trip last week, arrived in Malaysia on Tuesday morning and later made an unannounced two-day visit to Taiwan despite repeated warnings from China.
Pelosi is the most-senior US political leader to visit Taiwan since 1997.
