PUTRAJAYA: A complaints portal on bullying in schools will be completed next week to strengthen efforts to curb cases of bullying, education minister Radzi Jidin said.

He said parents and teachers would be able to lodge reports of bullying in schools by phone, email or at the portal, with the informant’s details kept confidential. He said the system would be able to cope with emergencies.

Radzi had been asked to comment on a bullying incident at the Mara Junior Science College in Kuantan. Without commenting directly on the issue, Radzi said his ministry was committed to minimising bullying incidents in schools.

Among the measures taken were the setting up of special committees to study ways to improve existing guidelines and procedures relating to bullying in schools.

To create a safe environment in schools, Sekolahku Sejahtera, Sepakat dan Selamat programme would be launched in partnership with the police and the home ministry.

The system currently practised also placed emphasis on character building and the inculcation of empathy, he said. “We can monitor as much as we want, but if their souls and thinking are clouded, their actions will lead to bullying cases,” he added.

Earlier, at a get-together with students and parents, Radzi said his ministry had implemented various programmes to create a generation of students capable of competing globally.

He said the abolition of the primary school examination (UPSR) and the Form Three assessment (PT3), had not been done in haste. He said Malaysians in general were too focused on examinations and did not place priority on the student’s overall development. - FMT
