Debutant Joe Ee dazzles with two golds for Malaysia in Commonwealth Games

PETALING JAYA: Debutant Ng Joe Ee stole the show to deliver two gold medals for Malaysia after capturing the ball and ribbon events in rhythmic gymnastics at the Commonwealth Games.

With her stunning contribution on Saturday (Aug 6), Malaysia reached their six gold medal target in Birmingham.

The 17-year-old Joe Ee impressed the judges with her classy show to earn a massive 29.700 points to finish top in the ball apparatus final to give rhythmic gymnastics their first gold.

Suzanna Shahbazian of Canada took the silver (29.050) and the bronze went to Anna Sokolova of Cyprus (28.800).

Then, Joe Ee returned for the ribbon apparatus and despite a fumble, she was adjudged the best with 27.800 points. She had the highest difficulties among the eight competitors.

Scotland's Louise Christie finished second with 27.550 points while Carmel Kallemaa of Canada came in third with 27.500.

A fifth-former at SMK Puteri Titiwangsa, Kuala Lumpur, Joe Ee is making her first appearance in the Games. She was a silver medal winner at the Hanoi SEA Games.

She has finished fourth in the team event together with her seniors Koi Sien Yan and Izzah Amzan. In the individual all-around, she came in fifth.

Izzah took a bronze in the clubs with a score of 28.600. - Star
