Delay in handling scam cases is cruelty to victims - PKR comms chief

Expressing his worry about the rampant rise in scam cases, PKR communications chief Lee Chean Chung described the delay of banks and authorities in acting on this issue as a form of cruelty.

He also gave the example of renowned nephrologist Dr Rafidah Abdullah, who recently shared that she had also been a victim of a scam, where RM13,000 of her savings had disappeared from her bank account without needing any TAC code.

“Dr Rafidah’s case shows that commercial banks know of the scams that are happening and the means used to perform these scams.

“This situation is allowed to happen because Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) has not done anything to tighten the cyber security system of commercial banks.

“I feel that BNM’s lack of action is a form of cruelty, as every day more and more victims are going to be scammed and potentially lose their life savings,” said Lee during a press conference at PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.

Meanwhile, PKR information chief Fahmi Fadzil questioned how scam syndicates know how much money is in the victims’ bank accounts.

He also claimed that the scammers would know who their victims would be solely based on the amount of money in the victims’ bank accounts.

“The authorities at Aibim (Malaysian Association of Banking and Islamic Finance) and ABM (Association of Malaysian Banks) must be aware that the current security in place can easily be taken advantage of by scammers.

“Due to this, the current security system, especially the one for online banking, must be revamped immediately, including implementation of dual-factor authentication and international mobile equipment identity.

“These are specific for each device, especially for odd transactions outside of the normal online transactions made by the user,” said the Lembah Pantai MP.

He said the government had failed to tackle the never-ending number of scams, and therefore, the Pakatan Harapan presidential council will discuss the formation of a task force to combat online crime during their next meeting.

“We have seen no effort made by the government in tackling this issue, and this is the same government who said they want to form a jihad to tackle inflation, but the rakyat has ended up losing millions.

“Is there no matter that is serious enough for the ministers?

“If Parliament isn’t dissolved, then the results of our special task force will be brought forth to Parliament and the ministers,” said Fahmi during the press conference. - Mkini
