Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin said the fight against corruption does not end with his predecessor Najib Abdul Razak being sent to jail, following the Federal Court’s decision to uphold the latter’s conviction in the RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd case today.
Najib still has to face another RM2.6 billion 1MDB case that has yet to be concluded, Muhyiddin reminded.
“There are also corruption cases involving the BN chairperson (Ahmad Zahid Hamidi) that are still ongoing, along with other high-profile cases,” he said in a statement uploaded onto Facebook today.
The Pagoh MP said he “sighed in relief” over the Federal Court upholding Najib’s 12-year conviction today.
He said the decision today showed that the judiciary is independent, capable of delivering justice, and restored the country’s good image.
“This freedom of the judiciary is what I fought for when I was prime minister.
“Even though there was political pressure for me to intervene in certain cases, I was firm in rejecting them even though I was forced to resign for defending this principle,” he said.
As such, Muhyiddin hoped that the judiciary will remain free and carry out its duties with integrity, as it is one of the pillars of democracy in the country.
Meanwhile, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim said the court’s decision today has affirmed the people’s power as this would not have happened without Malaysians voting BN out in the 2018 general election.
“The rakyat made a decision in 2018 to ensure an independent judiciary and that the country is free from corruption,” he said in a short video uploaded onto social media today.
He said Malaysians were the ones who enabled a “professional, firm, and courageous” judiciary, to make a decision based on facts, instead of bowing to political pressure. - Mkini
