Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob should negotiate with Perikatan Nasional (PN) before he sets a date for the next general election as this was part of an agreement between them, said the coalition’s chairperson.
Muhyiddin Yassin reminded Ismail Sabri they inked a deal which states that if the prime minister wants to call for polls, he has to negotiate with PN first as the coalition is also part of the government.
"But I don't know if he (Ismail Sabri) still remembers the agreement," Muhyiddin quipped while delivering a keynote address at the first PN convention in Serdang, Selangor today.
"In any case, we are ready to face election at any time. So if tomorrow the prime minister seeks an audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to ask for permission to dissolve Parliament, we, anak jantan (real men) are ready to enter the ring," he added.
The former prime minister said he enjoyed reading BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's statement that BN may lose if the election is called next year.
"I enjoyed reading the remark made by Zahid. This means they are not that strong.
"The purpose (for Umno) insisting the polls be held early is simply to regain power to save certain parties from court punishment. I don't think Malaysians will let this happen," Muhyiddin said.
He announced that, to PN, it does not matter when the 15th general election (GE15) is held.
Even if it is held this year, BN will suffer a more disastrous defeat, said the Bersatu president.
Previously, Zahid had said it is not inappropriate to hold the polls next year due to economic factors and a possible rise in the inflation rate.
Last week, Zahid said in a Facebook post that BN risks losing GE15 if it is not held within the next few months.
The Bagan Datuk MP said BN is at its strongest and was very confident about the coalition’s chances in the election.
Make Muhyiddin PM again
The PN convention today was attended by 1,300 delegates from component parties Bersatu, PAS, Gerakan, Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star), and the Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP).
The convention is meant for coalition allies to discuss their strategies and strengthen their unity ahead of GE15.
Meanwhile, Gerakan president Dominic Lau said PN should make Muhyiddin the next prime minister if it wins the next election.
"Is PN a strong coalition? It is strong. We have 12 ministers, including two senior ministers and 18 deputy ministers, we have three menteris besar and a chief minister, and we have 22 senators, 40 MPs, and 134 state assemblypersons.
"For me, however, it is not enough. So, let us focus our strength to help the people by winning the next election and take over the federal government.
"Let us make Muhyiddin as the 10th prime minister," Lau said.
Muhyiddin served for 17 months as the eighth prime minister after toppling the Pakatan Harapan federal administration via the Sheraton Move political coup in February 2020.
He later resigned after losing parliamentary support, making him the country’s shortest-serving prime minister. - Mkini
