Insolvent politician on DBKL board, MIC demands explanation

The Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has been urged to explain its rationale for appointing an insolvent individual to the Excise Licensing Board of the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur (ELBKL).

Federal Territories MIC deputy chairperson D Pala Kumaran said the individual is also a divisional chief of Bersatu’s associate wing.

"Our search at the Malaysian Department of Insolvency found that the 46-year-old was declared bankrupt on Jan 7, 2021. However he was appointed as a member of ELBKL in October last year," Pala Kumaran told Malaysiakini.

"Therefore, we urge the DBKL to provide an explanation on this appointment. How can an individual who is declared bankrupt be appointed as a board member?"

A search by Malaysiakini on Monday (Aug 1) at the Insolvency Department showed that the individual has not been removed from the bankrupt list.

When contacted, DBKL Licensing and Hawker Development Department director Khairul Anuar Mhd Juri said the City Hall has taken note of the matter.

"We will run a check on this matter. There is a certain process," Khairul said.

Meanwhile, Pala Kumaran, who is also the MIC Batu division chief, said his party planned to lodge a police report against the individual.

"We believe he has submitted false and fraudulent documents to be appointed as a board member. We will probably lodge a report to enable a police investigation," he said.

Malaysiakini has contacted the individual and Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin for comment. - Mkini
