Umno vice-president Mahdzir Khalid has denounced allegations that the party’s political bureau is putting pressure on the prime minister, calling the claims an attempt to divide the party.
He also denied that Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob was given an ultimatum to either call a snap election or be sacked.
“No, it’s all lies. Have some pity for the prime minister, this is all their handiwork. It’s the problem with social media.
“It’s like this: Someone is taking advantage of what is happening to divide people. Everyone knows that Ismail Sabri who is an Umno vice-president has become prime minister, whereas Zahid Hamidi is the (party) president.
“A wedge is being driven between the two different things. Who is sowing division… those people want to go to the polls too,” Mahdzir (above) said when met in Kuala Lumpur today.
Earlier, Malaysiakini reported that the Umno political bureau meeting on Wednesday (Aug 24) was tense, citing government and party sources.
In particular, Ismail Sabri was reportedly pressured to intervene in former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s incarceration.
However, several Umno leaders have denied this including Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan, Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki, and information chief Shahril Hamdan.
