PETALING JAYA: Khairuddin Aman Razali says he still holds PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang in high regard despite their disagreement over cooperation with Bersatu which led to his exit from the party.
“He is still my teacher. He only disagrees with my opinions. I can’t say to what extent as I haven’t seen him for a while since my resignation. I have no problem meeting (him),” he told FMT.
Khairuddin quit PAS on March 14 following his dismissal as secretary of the PAS Syura Council and as a member of its central committee. He was among the PAS leaders who were more in favour of the party cooperating with Umno than with Bersatu.
The former plantation industries and commodities minister said despite being an independent MP, his heart remained with the Islamic party and that he was willing to return to PAS should it decide to work with Umno again.
He also claimed that despite the strained relationship between PAS and Umno, Hadi had met former prime minister and Barisan Nasional adviser Najib Razak before the launch of Terengganu Perikatan Nasional in July.
That meeting, according to Khairuddin, touched on possible cooperation between Umno and PAS. He said he believed PAS still wanted to cooperate with Umno but Umno was being “cautious” as the party was still seen to be close to Bersatu.
On whether he felt PAS had gone astray under Hadi compared to when spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat was alive, Khairuddin said only leadership styles had changed.
“Each leader has their own way. Everyone has their strengths and weaknesses, but PAS’s principles, based on Islamic teachings, remain the same,” he said, adding he left PAS because of its political strategy and not principles. - FMT
