Kuantan businesses have three days to fly Jalur Gemilang or face fines

The Kuantan Municipal Council has given local businesses three days to comply with a requirement to fly the Jalur Gemilang and the Pahang state flag, in conjunction with the approaching National Day and Malaysia Day celebrations.

In a statement posted on its Facebook page today, the council reminded that flying the flags in conjunction with the National Day and other major celebrations is part of the business licence conditions it imposed, but many have yet to comply.

“Therefore, all licences are given three days starting today to install the flags, and compounds will be issued on a large scale after this period,” it said.

The council also reminded businesses to ensure that the flags flown on their premises are not faded or torn.

The statement did not mention the quantum of the compound, but a New Straits Times report in 2018 said Kuantan businesses could be slapped with a RM250 fine if they do not fly the Jalur Gemilang and the state flag between Aug 1 to Sept 16.

The circular on the requirement was reportedly issued in July that year, ostensibly to liven up the National Day celebrations and foster patriotism.

Other local governments, such as Ipoh and Subang Jaya, have considered similar fly-the-flag requirements before, but both ultimately decided against imposing the rule. - Mkini
