Malay voter apathy put non-Muslims, liberals in control, says Hadi

Non-Muslims would willingly return home to vote, even from jungles or overseas, says Abdul Hadi Awang.

PETALING JAYA: PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang has blamed apathy among Malay voters for causing non-Malays and “liberals” to gain control of the country’s political power in the last general election.

This included abstaining from voting, he said, Utusan Malaysia reported.

Non-Muslims, he claimed, never disregarded politics, even if they were working in “the jungles of Sabah and Sarawak” or overseas.

He added that non-Muslims would return willingly to their hometown to vote.

“Unlike Muslims, who do not want to take part in the electoral process which ultimately led to political power being snatched by others,” he said at a convention here.

Pakatan Harapan – led by Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was then with Bersatu – toppled Barisan Nasional which had been in power for 61 years in the 13th general election.

Hadi went on to say that it has become PAS’ responsibility to raise awareness among Malays on the importance of taking part in the country’s politics.

There was nothing “dirty” about politics contrary to the claims of some, he said, but added that it had been tainted by a few bad apples. - FMT
