MIC has suspended the membership of a youth wing member after he was arrested by the police last night.
This comes after his alleged involvement in injuring an activist who lodged a complaint with the MACC against several MIC leaders.
In a media statement, party secretary-general RT Rajasekaran confirmed the suspension.
"(This is) regarding a video that went viral on social media about an MIC Youth member who appeared to have injured another person.
"Therefore, on Aug 6, 2022, the MIC president has suspended the membership of Jegatheeswaran Sekharan, in accordance with Article 61.1 of the MIC party Constitution because his actions were contrary to the party's vision and mission.
"MIC absolutely does not support any kind of violence in any form or by any means," he told Malaysiakini.
He said this when commenting on a media report that Malaysian Indian Hope Association (PHIM) chairperson Mani Maran Manickam was injured after being stabbed at 4pm yesterday at Jalan Ipoh, in Kuala Lumpur.
Sentul district police chief Beh Eng Lai said the victim, aged 42, sustained a wound on his left wrist with a depth of 3cm after being stabbed by the suspect.
Beh said the MIC member was successfully arrested three hours after a report was received about the incident at 9.17pm yesterday.
"The suspect has three records of various past criminal offences and this case is being investigated under Section 324 of the Penal Code (for causing injury using a weapon or dangerous object),” Beh said.
Taking action due to viral video
Meanwhile, Rajasekaran said the suspension of Jegatheeswaran does not mean he is guilty of any of the charges.
"However, the MIC party had to take action against him now, given that the video of the incident has gone viral on social media.
"MIC is worried that if any decisive action is not taken, then this will set a bad example for any party.
"Any action by the MIC party following this matter will be based on the investigation and subsequent action by the police," he said.
Mani Maran was attacked for the second time in two weeks.
The activist was attacked for the first time by an unknown individual on July 27 in Kajang, Selangor and received 16 stitches in the back of his neck.
In the 1.40pm incident at a hotel, Mani Maran was attacked from behind.
The case is still under police investigation.
Mani Maran lodged a report to the MACC on July 22 along with what he claims to be additional evidence for the graft buster.
He claimed it implicated a cabinet minister in the scandal.
The PenjanaKerjaya programme provides salary incentives of up to 60 percent of an employee’s monthly salary to employers, as well as high skills training programmes or professional certificates to employees of up to RM7,000.
However, the programme became mired with allegations of false claims and misappropriation that are now the subject of an MACC crackdown codenamed Ops Hire.
According to Bernama, as of July 19, 45 suspects were arrested under the operation to facilitate investigations. - Mkini
