PETALING JAYA: A Bersatu minister has downplayed the need for a deputy prime minister, saying Putrajaya believes the current Cabinet line-up was sufficient.
In a written reply in the Dewan Negara, special functions minister Abdul Latiff Ahmad also said the appointment of ministers and their deputies is the “sole prerogative” of the prime minister.
He was replying to senator Khairil Nizam Khirudin of PAS, who wanted to know the government’s stand on the appointment of a deputy prime minister.
Bersatu leaders have been pressing Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob to honour his promise to appoint a deputy prime minister from the party as part of the terms of support from Perikatan Nasional before he took office in August.
Ismail was to have met Bersatu secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin on the agreement last Thursday but the meeting was cancelled at the last minute. - FMT
