Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob today said he did not receive any request from Umno to intervene in former premier Najib Abdul Razak's final appeal at the Federal Court.
Instead, Ismail Sabri, who is also Umno vice president, said the urgent meeting of party division chiefs yesterday only discussed ways to strengthen the party to face the upcoming general election.
"There was none," he told reporters when asked about rumours of him being pressured by several Umno leaders to intervene in Najib’s case.
Astro Awani had yesterday reported on the intervention call, citing anonymous Umno sources, although this was later denied by Umno Youth chief Ashraf Wajdi Dusuki.
When asked about requests made by division leaders for snap polls to be called, Ismail Sabri claimed ignorance citing his absence from the meeting.
"I don't know. I was not there yesterday... I heard what Tok Mat (Umno deputy president Mohamad Hasan) said in Perak yesterday.
"Among others, to strengthen the party. That is normal for Umno, we gather to discuss about strengthening the party," the Bera MP added.
Yesterday, Sungai Besar Umno chief Jamal Mohd Yunos claimed that all division chiefs who attended the meeting had unanimously agreed for the 15th general election to be called soon.
While Ismail Sabri was not present at the meeting, a group of top Umno leaders later went to his official residence in Putrajaya to convey the demands.
It is to note that Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi did not attend the meeting at Seri Perdana and sources said Mohamad had represented the president, although only Umno vice president Mahdzir Khalid’s car was spotted entering the compound at around 6pm. - Mkini
