Turun to mark PM's one year anniversary with protest

A protest will be held by the Turun movement at the Sogo shopping complex in Kuala Lumpur next Saturday (Aug 20) to mark the first anniversary of Ismail Sabri Yaakob's tenure as prime minister.

Dubbed “Himpunan Kerajaan Gagal”, its organising committee said the protest will take place at 2pm.

This is the second protest to be mobilised by the group. On July 23, the police stopped Turun protesters who gathered at Sogo from marching to Dataran Merdeka.

In a statement today, Turun said Ismail Sabri had inherited the legacy of a failed government as he and some in the cabinet failed to address major problems in the country.

“The Special Task Force on Jihad against Inflation announced by Ismail Sabri 44 days ago turned out to be a committee that failed to deal with inflation as goods prices continue to increase.

“There is no action nor additional assistance given to the people who were squeezed by the cost of living,” the group said.

They pointed out that the five demands outlined by the Turun protest last month have not been met.

“In fact, we were slapped with additional problems and scandals, such as misappropriation in handling the RM9 billion littoral combat ships (LCS) project,” they said.

Their five demands to the government were: that ministers' pay is cut, government subsidies are continued, decent assistance for the people, controlled prices of goods, and for the food security issue be addressed.

“His action and response from the beginning to this moment show that he is not fit to hold the position of prime minister.

Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob

“Ismail Sabri was the former senior defence minister for 17 months and certainly knew the background of this (LCS) scandal yet he did not answer issues raised in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) report.”

Turun also expressed its unhappiness over the way the government dealt with the huge flood last December and the issue of asset seizure by the descendants of the Sulu sultanate.

“In fact, Malaysia slipped to the 32nd position in the World Competitiveness Ranking (WCR) by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) 2022, down seven positions from 25th in 2021 is a clear warning of the governance failure in Ismail Sabri’s administration.

“He did not display courage on matters related to integrity and corruption, particularly when MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki’s case was closed.

“It is clear the appointments, policies, and actions of the government led by Ismail Sabri and Umno failed in almost all aspects because they only want power via government positions but have no clue how to bring the country forward.

“Therefore, we have only one choice: go down and celebrate the first anniversary of Ismail Sabri as prime minister in the Himpunan Kerajaan Gagal with demands, namely slashing ministers’ wages, downsizing the cabinet, and returning their one-year wages.” - Mkini
