Umno AGM in Nov, all BN states to adopt 'anti-hopping' law

Umno's supreme council yesterday resolved that the party's national annual general assembly (AGM) will be held between Nov 23 and Nov 26, while the division level AGM will be held in October.

The decision followed the Registrar of Societies' (ROS) greenlight for Umno to amend its constitution to delay internal leadership election until after a general election.

"The amendments to the Umno constitution will take effect from July 29. The supreme council expressed its appreciation (to the ROS)," said Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan.

Ahmad said the supreme council has also urged party activists to focus all their efforts on preparing for the next general election.

Meanwhile, the Umno supreme council has ordered all BN state governments to amend their laws to facilitate new Federal Constitution clauses that are aimed at discouraging lawmakers from switching parties.

Last week, the constitutional amendments passed by the Dewan Rakyat could only apply to MPs once gazetted.

However, states have the option to adopt new amendments to the eighth schedule to incorporate similar laws for state assemblypersons. - Mkini
