Ustaz, three wardens arrested over rehab inmate's death in Kuala Kangsar

IPOH: An ustaz and three wardens from a drug rehabilitation centre in Padang Rengas, Kuala Kangsar, are believed to be involved with the death of an inmate and have been arrested.

Acting Perak police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said the arrests were made after the 25-year-old inmate, identified as Muhammad Shahrul Samion, from Shah Alam, Selangor, was found dead in a car when he was brought to the Kuala Kangsar Hospital on Aug 17 at about 8.10pm.

"A doctor had checked the man and found injuries on his forehead and also bruises to the face, left eye, chests, arms and legs.

"The doctor was made to understand that the man had been unconscious since about 7pm," he said in a statement on Friday (Aug 19).

"The doctor then lodged a police report," he added.

DCP Azizi said according to the rehabilitation centre's founder and wardens, the man had run amok and tried to injure a few wardens with a knife on Wednesday at about 1.45pm.

"He was apprehended and calmed down after getting into a fracas with some of the wardens, who had punched the man in the body.

"At about 4.45pm, the man had again tried to escape and jumped from a flight of stairs on the first floor of a building that was about 8m high," he said.

"After being apprehended, the man had his legs and arms bound with some cloth to prevent him from running amok and escaping again before being placed in a room," he added.

DCP Azizi said during the confinement, the man slammed his head on the floor and walls until he bled.

"At about 7.45pm, a warden found him unconscious and rushed him to the hospital.

"On Friday between 9.15am and 2.45pm at the hospital forensics unit, a post-mortem was conducted and found that the cause of death to be 'chest and musculoskeletal injuries due to blunt trauma'," he said, adding that the matter is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

The ustaz and the three wardens are expected to be remanded on Saturday (Aug 20). - Star
