PETALING JAYA: Parti Sarawak Bersatu (PSB) has questioned why three-term Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How contested under the party’s ticket at the Sarawak state elections in December if he was against party politics.
It said See, who joined PSB in May 2020, should have resigned from the party in December and contested as an independent candidate.
The party’s secretariat said See had never once expressed reservations or objections about party politics despite being a member of PSB’s leadership.
It said See had been involved in many party decisions, including interviewing and selecting candidates for the last state election.
“There was never any complaint about ‘party politicking’ from See. So, we are taken aback that he has chosen to use party politics as his reason for quitting PSB after winning the seat as the party’s candidate.
“PSB nominated him as our candidate for the Batu Lintang constituency because we believed in him and that he shared our ideals. Unfortunately, it looks like we were mistaken,” the secretariat said in a statement.
See previously said his decision to leave PSB was to free himself from party politics and allow him to spend more time on his work as an assemblyman and to work with others, including NGOs, who shared his mission for a better Sarawak.
The PSB secretariat expressed shock that See had declared he would be “friendly” to Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), when he had been an opposition politician throughout his political career.
It also called on See to act honourably and “submit himself” to the voters of Batu Lintang in a by-election as an independent candidate.
See first won the Batu Lintang state seat in the 10th Sarawak elections in 2011 as a PKR candidate and successfully defended the seat in the 2016 elections, before switching to PSB to win for the third time in the state elections last year. - FMT
