The Pahang legislative assembly today made history by appointing a non-Malay as a deputy speaker.
Lee Chin Chen (Harapan-Bilut) was today sworn in as deputy speaker. Lee (above) is a two-term Bilut assemblyperson and one-term Ketari assemblyperson.
The Pahang state assembly also appointed Temerloh Umno division chief Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin as the speaker.
Sharkar also made history by becoming the first person to hold the position without being an elected lawmaker.
He was the Lanchang assemblyperson for four terms. During the Nov 19 elections, he did not defend his seat and instead had an unsuccessful run for the Temerloh parliamentary seat.
He is also a member of the Umno supreme council.
Both were nominated by Menteri Besar Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail (BN-Jelai) while Mohd Soffi Abd Razak (BN-Benta) seconded.
BN and Harapan allied themselves to form a government after no single party or coalition managed to do so.
Currently, the Pahang state assembly comprises 17 BN lawmakers and eight Harapan lawmakers on the government side. There are 17 lawmakers on the opposition bench.
Meanwhile, PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man (PN-Cheka) was appointed opposition leader. - Mkini
