PETALING JAYA: It will become compulsory for workers at food and beverage (F&B) outlets in Selangor to mask up from Jan 1.
According to a Facebook post by the Selayang municipal council (MPS), the mandate extends to all food handlers and cooks in restaurants, as well as hawkers.
“Compound fines will be imposed on those who disregard this directive, which is also a requirement to obtain a business licence,” MPS said in the post.
Earlier this month, the Kajang municipal council (MPKj) said it will strengthen the enforcement for the mandatory mask mandate on restaurant workers and hawkers beginning next year.
According to Selangorkini, MPKj council president Najmuddin Jemain said the mandatory face mask ruling for food handlers and cooks in Selangor was decided on Sept 7 during the state government’s council meeting.
“This is among initiatives to ensure workers handling food and drinks are accustomed to wearing masks as a way to ensure cleanliness at eateries,” he said.
Users on social media seem divided over the announcement. Some welcomed the enforcement, while others questioned its necessity.
The wearing of a face mask is still compulsory on public transportation like buses, trains, flights, taxis, e-hailing vehicles, as well as at hospitals and medical institutions.
Owners of premises such as shopping malls, shops or restaurants may still enforce rules requiring visitors to mask up. - FMT
