Anti-graft activist Cynthia Gabriel named a champion by US

The US State Department has named Cynthia Gabriel as one of its anti-corruption champions of 2022.

PETALING JAYA: Anti-corruption activist Cynthia Gabriel has been named by the US State Department as one of its “Anti-Corruption Champions” for 2022.

The department commended Gabriel for her efforts to promote good governance and root out corruption at the highest levels of government and businesses.

“Despite harassment by the authorities, she remains undeterred and continues to expose corruption and corrupt practices, including in government procurement, environmental exploitation, and political financing,” it said on Twitter.

Gabriel, executive director of the Center to Combat Corruption and Cronyism, is among eight people from across the globe recognised for their work to expose and combat corruption.

She was also nominated for the 2022 International Women of Courage Award by the US embassy in Kuala Lumpur.

She has been vocal about the share ownership issue clouding Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief Azam Baki, as well as the need for institutional reforms in the anti-graft agency earlier this year. - FMT
