PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s line-up of deputy ministers have been met with mixed reactions from netizens, with some welcoming the inclusion of certain MPs while others were disappointed.
Some were quick to scoff at the inclusion of Umno secretary-general Ahmad Maslan as deputy finance minister, along with DAP’s Steven Sim, with some questioning the merit of his appointment.
Some had questioned why Ahmad had made the cut ahead of Titiwangsa MP Johari Ghani, who was perceived as having greater experience and had been tipped for the finance minister post previously.
“Seriously? The Ahmad Maslan that was labelled as a joke by Pakatan Harapan? That one?” said Facebook user Dani Din.
Twitter user @Daud_Shah92 had questioned whether there was a need for two deputy finance ministers, but others reasoned that it was appropriate given the heavy responsibility that comes with the portfolio.
On the other hand, Twitter user @umobile defended Ahmad, saying the Pontian MP was frugal and could handle the post well in reinforcing Malaysia’s economy.
Still, others quipped that his appointment would see the comeback of the goods and services tax (GST). Ahmad was once the Najib Razak government’s spokesman for GST matters.
There was a much better reception for Ramkarpal Singh as deputy law and institutional reforms minister, who was quickly welcomed by minister Azalina Othman Said on Twitter.
“Welcome to the law and institutional reform team, Ramkarpal! Constitutional and litigation experts in the house,” said the Barisan Nasional MP, as netizens chimed in saying they were the best combination so far.
Similarly, the appointment of former student activist Adam Adli was welcomed by youth and sports minister Hannah Yeoh, who said: “Yay, Adam Adli is with me in the youth and sports ministry.”
Netizens said they were looking forward to seeing what Yeoh and Adam would do for sports and young people in Malaysia, describing the two as a good pairing for the portfolio.
Meanwhile, some had questioned Lim Hui Ying’s appointment as deputy education minister, pointing out that she had yet to prove her capabilities while being a first-time MP.
Former Kuantan MP Fuziah Salleh’s appointment was also scrutinised, with @sinach_z pointing out that she had failed to defend her seat during the Nov 19 elections.
