Contented with sea view, lecturer turns down Anwar’s offer

Mohammad Agus Yusoff, who is now teaching at the State University of Gorontalo in Sulawesi, Indonesia, is certain of retiring on the island.

“God willing, my villa will be completed in a couple of months and I will be frolicking in the beauty of the sea there,” he stated in a Facebook post.

The former Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) lecturer revealed that he had turned down an offer from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to work for the government.

“As far as work is concerned, I am comfortable. The PM offered me (a position)  to contribute to the current government, (but) I told him that I will be returning to Gorontalo on Dec 27.

“I am at peace with the nature there. It is written that Gorontalo will be the province for my retirement,” added the political science lecturer.

‘Support not because I wanted position’

Agus (top picture) also responded to the perception amongst some of his “friends” that he had supported Anwar to be the prime minister to secure a post.

“Don’t have such a narrow-minded perception. I supported Anwar because I wanted him to bring change to this nation.

“I cannot imagine what would have happened if some other leader ruled,” he added without mentioning if he was referring to Perikatan Nasional chairperson Muhyiddin Yassin and PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang.

The Facebook post also contained a video clip of Agus hugging Anwar at a dinner with the group of 70 Malay professors, known as G70.

In a document called “G70 Malay professors’ declaration”, the group supported Anwar to be the prime minister based on his “experience, credibility, and integrity” to lead a multiracial nation with Islam as the official religion of the federation.

The professors also described Pakatan Harapan as the best option to resolve Malaysia’s economic woes as well as to protect the interests of Islam, the Malays, and the bumiputera. - Mkini
