PUTRAJAYA: Digital communications minister Fahmi Fadzil plans to meet service providers from all social media platforms to better understand their regulatory framework.

At a press conference, he said he will first be meeting with a representative from TikTok over the spread of videos that touched on the May 13, 1969 race riots amid the general election.

The minister said he wanted to understand and ascertain social media platforms’ regulatory framework on topics concerning race and religion.

On Nov 30, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it had called for TikTok’s management to provide an “immediate explanation” over three videos on its platform which warned of a repeat of the May 13 riots.

It added that the videos were paid content.

On Nov 21, Inspector-General of Police Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani warned social media users against uploading content that touched on racial and religious sensitivities which could threaten public safety and order.

When asked about the establishment of a media council, Fahmi said he hoped to get further details on the proposal from the ministry.

“Prior to becoming minister I was personally very committed (to the issue) as I have a lot of friends who are media practitioners.

“But it’s not about friendship. It is about professionalism and ensuring that freedom of speech, especially among media practitioners, is upheld,” he said.

Fahmi also said he looked forward to meeting representatives from Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB), having been briefed by ministry officials on the roll-out of the 5G network.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the 5G network rollout must be reviewed to ensure that relevant parties had followed strict procedures.

Anwar said he had instructed for the project to be reviewed as it was not done in a transparent manner, with no proper tender process conducted. - FMT
