Harapan's Padang Serai candidate optimistic due to last-minute support

With less than 24 hours to go before Padang Serai polling starts, Pakatan Harapan candidate Mohamad Sofee Razak said he is optimistic about his chances of winning the election tomorrow.

Though off to a slow start, Sofee said he is seeing burgeoning support from the voters as campaigning comes to an end at midnight in Padang Serai.

"I have managed to visit about 50 percent of the Malay voters, 90 percent of the Chinese voters and 80 percent of the Indian voters in the constituency.

"I can see now the swing of voters after the Warisan and BN candidates withdrew from the race," he added.

Sofee said he is more confident that victory is coming his way after the mega election rally at Taman Tunku Putra in Lunas on Monday night.

Newly minted ministers Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and Rafizi Ramli – who are also respectively the BN chairperson, PKR secretary-general and PKR deputy president – had addressed the crowd that attended the rally that night.

BN candidate C Sivarraajh – who withdrew from the race last week – also spoke at the event and threw his support behind Sofee.

Sway of voters after govt formation

Sofee said he could see the sway of voters over the last week after Harapan formed the new government with BN and other parties from Sabah and Sarawak as people now believe that he can bring development to the constituency.

"They believe I am from the ruling party (and so I) can bring immediate solutions for flooding, internet connection and improved road system and public transport to the constituency.

"As people requested, I can also help to bring additional public health clinics and a separate hospital for Padang Serai with the latest medical equipment as the Kulim Hospital had reached its full capacity," he added.

The Padang Serai by-election will be held tomorrow after it was postponed due to the death of Harapan’s candidate and incumbent M Karupaiya several days before the GE15 polling on Nov 19.

Despite the withdrawal of the BN and Warisan candidates to pave way for Sofee, there will be six names on the ballot paper - Sofee, Sivarraajh, Perikatan Nasional’s Azman Nasrudin, Pejuang’s Hamzah Abd Rahman, Warisan’s Bakri Hashim and independent candidate Sreanandha Rao. - Mkini
