KUALA LUMPUR: The president of the Malaysian Bar, Karen Cheah, says she looks forward to working with new law minister Azalina Othman Said on institutional reforms to ensure that good governance is upheld by the new government.
Cheah said institutional reforms play an important role in good governance, an objective mentioned by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, alongside economic recovery.
“I hope we will be able to engage her (Azalina) directly and move some of the reforms that are quite urgent and critical at the moment,” she told reporters.
Cheah said the Bar Council has prepared all the paperwork required and hopes to meet Azalina soon to discuss the reforms that the Bar has in mind.
Azalina was named as minister for law and institutional reforms, an expansion of the role she once had as de facto law minister from 2015 to 2018.
She has been a Cabinet member since 2004, when she became the first woman to be appointed as youth and sports minister. In 2020, she became the first woman to be appointed as deputy speaker of the Dewan Rakyat. - FMT
