The National Recovery Council (NRC) headed by former premier Muhyiddin Yassin has been shut down, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed today.
Anwar also revealed that former Machang MP Ahmad Jazlan Yaakub's appointment as Felcra chairperson had been postponed.
Speaking to the press after today's cabinet meeting, the premier said the government was looking to cut down on bodies with overlapping duties.
Anwar added that the NRC was one of such overlapping body.
"The NRC has been terminated. There was overlap there.
"The position was created to fulfil the need at that time," he said, before jokingly asking reporters if it should be continued.
Muhyiddin was appointed as NRC chairperson in September 2021, with his post carrying minister-level status.
The appointment was widely believed to be an effort to placate Muhyiddin and Bersatu after he was overthrown as prime minister and replaced by Ismail Sabri Yaakob.
Asked about whether the National Centre for Governance, Integrity and Anti-Corruption (GIACC) would also be shut down, Anwar said it was being reviewed.
"If a matter can be carried out by the MACC or police, we want to reduce overlap, because every overlapping agency will incur high costs," he added.
Anwar stressed, however, that GIACC's principle of good governance was something the government accepted.

Meanwhile, on political appointments, Anwar said Jazlan's appointment as Felcra chief had been postponed and that this had been relayed to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Zahid had re-appointed the former Machang MP - who is one of his lieutenants in Umno - to Felcra on Saturday.
The move came two days after the cabinet axed all political appointees in GLCs.
However, Anwar clarified today that he is not completely opposed to GLCs being led by politicians.
"I never said that any politician can't be involved in management (of GLCs).
"However this is subject to terms and they must have qualifications in the related field.
"There may be several political leaders or MPs tasked (with heading GLCs) but we have set that it must be based on their professional capabilities, previous performance, and compliance with rules," he said. - Mkini
