Cabinet agrees to give Sabah regulatory control over its natural gas

The cabinet has agreed to give Sabah regulatory control over its natural gas resources.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the control over natural gas prices and authority to ink new agreements will be transferred from Petronas to the state.

However, he said the actual date of implementation will depend on the Yang di-Pertuan Agong's royal assent.

In late 2020, Petronas ceded control over Sarawak’s natural gas to the state government, which has its own gas body - Petroleum Sarawak Bhd (Petros).

Sabah had been seeking regulatory control over gas and electricity for some time and had initiated efforts by setting up the Sabah Energy Commission in August.

Anwar’s announcement was made during a post-cabinet press conference in Putrajaya today.

Meanwhile, on the implementation of the Malaysia Agreement 1963, Anwar (above) said that Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof has been given one month to settle several issues.

“God willing, in early January, one month (from now), we will propose several good developments to solve several issues,” he said.

However, he said some matters that require legal amendments will have to wait until Parliament convenes.

Parliament is scheduled to convene in February, where Anwar will also table a new Budget 2023. - Mkini
