PM heads to Kelantan, national new year celebration cancelled

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim will be heading to Kelantan today to assess the flood situation there.

He said an announcement will be made after getting feedback from the ground and from the state government.

Speaking during the post-cabinet press conference in Putrajaya today, Anwar said the government is also considering more involvement from NGOs and volunteer groups, as well as the armed forces to tackle the floods.

“Because of the floods and the people’s hardships, we have also decided to cancel major new year celebrations at Dataran Merdeka,” he added.

Monsoon floods are battering several peninsula states, with Kelantan and Terengganu bearing the brunt of it.

As of 12pm today, 72,092 people have been displaced by floods, of whom 31,316 are from Kelantan, and 40,453 are from Terengganu.

Flooding has also killed five people in the two east coast states.

Two of the fatalities were toddlers, a 15-month-old boy in Kelantan, and a two-year-old girl in Terengganu.

Also killed were three sisters in Kelantan, who were electrocuted when their house was flooded. - Mkini
