Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (Abim) has urged for the coming 15th Parliament to include discussions over the increasingly worrying flood conditions in Kelantan and Terengganu.
Their concerns were raised after the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) issued warnings of thunderstorms and continuous heavy rain for several states, including the two aforementioned ones.
Abim president Muhammad Faisal Abdul Aziz suggested that in addition to the vote of confidence for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, a special motion regarding the floods should be tabled during the Parliament session tomorrow and Tuesday (Dec 19 and 20).
He referred to the Dewan Rakyat standing order 18 which stipulates that any Parliament member may request permission for leave to discuss a matter of urgent public significance by reading the text of the motion approved by the speaker.
“The debate should also cover the preparedness of government machinery in the face of floods.
“As well as coordinating aid and long-term planning for flood disaster management, and more importantly, making plans to deal with climate change,” Faisal said in a statement today.
Further, the group urged that all parties and politicians must put their differences aside to work together to stabilise the current political situation and ease the burden of the people.
Yesterday, the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) also issued flood warnings for six districts in Terengganu and eight in Kelantan based on their flood forecast simulation.
The floods in Kelantan are expected to stretch until tomorrow noon, whereas the Terengganu floods are predicted to last until Tuesday. - Mkini
