Police: Floodwaters kill 2-year-old girl in Terengganu

A two-year-old girl has been killed by floodwaters in Terengganu, which police say is the first such fatality in the state during the current monsoon season.

Nur Hilwa Idris Mohd Haris Zaifan was reported to have fallen through her kitchen door and was then swept away by floodwaters.

TV3 reported that the incident at Kampung Apal in Besut occurred at around 3pm.

Her remains were found in a drain about 20m from the home, some 40 minutes later.

Terengganu police chief Rohaimi Md Isa said Nur Hilwa was reported to have wandered out on her own while her aunt was preparing to evacuate them.

The incident was said to have happened when the victim’s aunt who was at home was getting ready to evacuate to the temporary relief centre (PPS) as floodwaters were rising before she discovered the girl had left by herself through the kitchen door,” he was quoted as saying by Bernama.

Last week, two deaths by drowning were also reported in Terengganu.

On Dec 12 , three-year-old Muhammad Sufi Eijas Mohd Sabri was playing on a canal bridge in Manir, Kuala Terengganu with his brother when he slipped and fell into the waters below.

On the same day in Setiu, 72-year-old Zakaria Mat Nong slipped into the waters while trying to net a catch at a shrimp pond at 7pm.

Both victims were found dead the next day. Their deaths were not attributed to the floods.

According to Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Armizan Mohd Ali, as of 4pm today, there were 5,385 victims displaced by floods in Perak, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, and Johor. - Mkini
