KUALA LUMPUR: Over 110 Wanita Umno leaders gathered at the party’s headquarters at Menara Dato’ Onn here to state their support for Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to continue as the party’s president.
Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad said Umno and Barisan Nasional needed to look ahead instead of looking for someone to blame for its dismal performance in the 15th general election.
“We should take this as a lesson and make it a new starting point for Umno and BN to work on restoring the confidence and support of the people for the party and coalition,” she said in a statement after a briefing for the Wanita Umno leaders.
Noraini also called on all Umno members to place their trust and faith in Zahid to continue leading the party.
“The result of GE15 is a clear signal from the people that Umno and BN members must understand and respect. We need to accept and respect the mandate given (to Umno’s rivals),” she said.
Meanwhile, Batu Umno chief Yahya Mat Ghani, who had called on Zahid to step down as president after the polls, made an about-turn and said he accepted the party’s decision to form the government with Pakatan Harapan.
He added that Zahid deserved to determine Umno’s direction when it came to forming a multi-coalition government.
“The leadership is more knowledgeable in this matter, and of course, as a leader, he thinks about the ‘survival’ of the party. I think the president’s (Zahid) move to join the unity government was a smart one to ensure Umno can rise again,” he said. - FMT
