Penang DAP laments 'unbalanced' political composition of new cabinet

Penang DAP has described the political composition of the newly unveiled cabinet under Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's government as “unbalanced”, despite agreeing with the formation of a smaller one.

Its chairperson Chow Kon Yeow pointed out that DAP received fewer cabinet positions although it had won more Parliament seats compared to some political parties.

“A political party which won fewer seats than DAP in GE15 is getting double the number of ministers compared to DAP.

“We regret that none of the seven DAP MPs in Penang was appointed as ministers, although we understand that ultimately, it is the prime minister’s decision to choose who should be on his cabinet,” he said today.

Chow (above) told this to reporters when asked to comment about the cabinet line-up of the new government.

In GE15, DAP won 40 parliamentary seats, which is a slight drop from the previous 42 in GE14.

When asked further about the possible political composition of deputy ministers, Chow skirted the question.

“I still have to wait for the announcement.”

Only 4 DAP ministers

In the previous Pakatan Harapan cabinet, following its victory in GE14, there were six DAP MPs who became ministers.

In the new cabinet which was unveiled yesterday, only four of DAP’s lawmakers were named ministers.

Last night, Anwar revealed his cabinet, which includes BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi as deputy prime minister I and GPS' Fadillah Yusof as deputy prime minister II.

In a televised address, the Harapan chairperson said the cabinet would comprise 28 ministers in 22 ministries and four portfolios in the Prime Minister's Department.

The strength of the government was reaching nearly two-thirds majority in the Dewan Rakyat, he added.

The previous Mahathir Mohamad-led Harapan government in 2018 saw 28 ministers named, with 27 deputy ministers. - Mkini
