PN’s Padang Serai win in line with GE ‘electoral wave’, say analysts

PETALING JAYA: Perikatan Nasional’s (PN) victory in the Padang Serai parliamentary election last night was in line with the “electoral wave” that the nation experienced in the 15th general election (GE15), says an analyst.

Awang Azman Pawi of Universiti Malaya said PN candidate Azman Nasrudin’s 16,260-vote majority over Pakatan Harapan’s Sofee Razak was expected considering PN’s strong showing in GE15, when it won 73 seats.

PN has now won 13 of the 15 parliamentary seats in Kedah, including Langkawi.

“The Islamic sentiment is still strong, especially with PAS governing the state,” said Azman.

He said PN worked hard to prove that the “tag team” of PAS and Bersatu had better odds in Padang Serai, especially with assistance from the PAS state government.

Commenting on Johari Hussain’s win for Barisan Nasional in the battle for the Tioman state seat last night, Azman said it was hardly a surprise considering that Johari has been the area’s assemblyman since 2008.

Oh Ei Sun of the Singapore Institute of International Affairs also said the result in Padang Serai tallied with the overall election trend in GE15, “namely, PAS’ dominance in the northern region”.

Meanwhile, social media users have told PH not to take last night’s election results lightly considering the state elections will take place next year in the PAS-led states of Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu, as well as the PH-controlled states of Penang, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.

Twitter user @ChanKobrick said PKR should start worrying about its chances of retaining seats in Penang and Selangor.

Another Twitter user, @hisyamghazali91 said the new government led by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim must perform and counter the narrative spread by PN immediately as it faces the state elections.

“(PH) needs to be prepared as soon as possible,” added the user. - FMT
