The Education Ministry will take serious action and cooperate with the police to curb incidents of racism and extremism in schools, said its minister Fadhlina Sidek.
As part of the ministry’s new seven main focuses under her leadership, Fadhlina said they will prioritise character building among students through good manners, character, and integrity.
“We want these children to grow up in the context of harmony and in a safe school environment because we believe that by building their manners, characters and integrity, they will be able to overcome issues such as extremism.
“Just as we do not compromise on issues of bullying and gangsterism, we also will not compromise on issues of racism and extremism.
“It is our responsibility to ensure children are safe in schools and so, if there are any racial or extremist threats, we will not hesitate to take serious action and we will surely work with the police to curb racism and extremism from happening in schools,” Fadhlina (above) said in a press conference at the Education Ministry in Putrajaya today.
At the same time, Fadhlina announced that she intends to reactivate the National Education Advisory Council as enshrined under the Education Act 1996.
However, she said no names have been confirmed as members of the council yet.
“For now, we still do not have any names, but we have announced it so we will implement the process by appointing those who will be part of the advisory council soon,” she said.
When asked about Pakatan Harapan’s manifesto which included recognising the Unified Examination Certificate, Fadhlina stressed that the government’s current priority is on the economy and cost of living.
“Any other matters that are being raised will be examined from time to time,” she said.
She also pointed out that the current government does not consist of only Harapan, but also of other parties as it is a unity government. - Mkini
