Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad did not join NGO Muafakat Nasional (MN) but will support it for the good of the country and Malays, said Annuar Musa.
The MN founder said this when asked about a meeting between him and the former prime minister yesterday, who visited his office in Kuala Lumpur.
The former Ketereh MP, who helms the organisation, said this during a press conference at the Muafakat Nasional NGO office in Damansara earlier today.
“For me, whether Tun (Mahathir) joins MN is irrelevant. Tun is a statesperson, MN is just a small association.
“Tun is the father of our country, no matter what happens, no one can deny that he is a great statesperson.
“On whether he is an official member or not, I have invited him to join. He replied ‘You just do it, I support the good’.
“Mahathir also expressed his concern about the position of Malays. He said he would support efforts for the good of the country and the Malays,” said Annuar.
Meanwhile, Annuar said that as of yesterday, MN received almost 20,000 applications to join the NGO.
He also announced a list of 30 members of the MN central leadership.
Among the big names appointed were former Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, former minister Mohd Redzuan Md Yusof, PAS committee member Mohd Zuhdi Marzuki, and Federal Territories Pejuang chairperson Khairuddin Abdul Hassan.
Also appointed were speaker Ridhuan Tee Abdullah, Umno leaders Noh Omar and Budiman Zohdi, former Segamat MP Edmund Santhara, and representatives from MCA and MIC.
Protect Malay position
Annuar’s MN is an association registered with the Registrar of Societies and is not to be confused with the pact between Umno and PAS - signed in September 2019.
According to MN’s website, the group aims to organise activities to promote the Rukun Negara and Federal Constitution.
The group also aims to protect the position of the Malay rulers, special positions of the Malays and bumiputera, safeguarding the interests of other ethnic groups, the Malay language, and the interests of a plural society.
It plans to do so by organising several discussions and a “Muafakat Nasional tour” - a series of closed-door seminars - as well as a national-level convention.
Annuar’s Umno membership was terminated five days ago and he has been recruiting for MN since.
