Poverty eradication at heart of long-term economic plans, Rafizi shares

Economy Minister Rafizi Ramli has shared a video on social media in which he details what his duties entail, saying that his main focus is long-term economic planning, with poverty eradication at its heart.

"This is my 10th day in the office in my official capacity as the economy minister.

"The primary function of the ministry is clear, which is to plan and execute programmes to make sure the growth of the economy is going well and the profits of the economy reach the people," Rafizi explained in a TikTok video that he also uploaded on Twitter today.

He said that people might want to know the difference between the Economy Ministry and Finance Ministry.

"The Economy Ministry engages viewpoints and research with the consideration of long-term planning.

"We are responsible for adjustments to development expenditure so that they can boost economic growth and steer it in the direction that would achieve the goals we are targeting.

"Aside from daily duties, like meetings and making decisions that involve an impact on the economy, in the first 10 days my duties have been to understand the long-term plans, particularly those that are part of the 12th Malaysia Plan," Rafizi added.

The 12th Malaysia Plan offers a clear strategic direction to allocate the national budget from 2021 to 2025 for all economic sectors.

This is in line with the shared prosperity initiative encompassing three dimensions which are economic empowerment, environmental sustainability and social reengineering.

"I am also looking from a data standpoint to understand what is needed in terms of targeted subsidies and also our financial capability.

"In coming days, my main focus will be on plans for poverty eradication," the minister said.

His post indicated that Jan 23 was the deadline for these plans.

"There are also meetings such as conferences with the economy ministers of Opec (Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries).

"On a week-to-week basis I am also doing some housekeeping within the ministry," he added.

Rafizi told viewers that he will be issuing weekly updates on his activities.

The minister also responded positively to a tweet from Reza Razali of community-driven NGO Kitajaga.com, who suggested a meeting over the poverty eradication plans. - Mkini
