RapidKL: Repairs at stations underway, spare parts wait caused delay

Rapid Rail Sdn Bhd has revealed that repair works are now underway at certain LRT, MRT and Monorail stations across the Klang Valley after the delays.

In a statement today, Rapid Rail attributed the delay to disruptions in the global supply chain for spare parts - with it only receiving the required spare parts for the repairs in early December.

It said that it is now in the process of replacing parts for escalator services at MRT stations affected by the works - with the works being carried out in stages and expected to be completed by February 2023.

"As of Dec 15, the processes of replacing 20 handrail units and three step chain units at 10 MRT stations have been completed, and the escalators at the stations are back in operation.

"As a long-term measure, we have implemented a ‘condition based maintenance’ (CBM) programme, where the process of replacing components that are judged to be damaged or frequently problematic will continue to be implemented without waiting for its end of service life.

"Based on the CBM concept we have made sufficient advance bookings to support the programme," Rapid Raid said in its statement.

Other repairs include

  • Fixing wiring systems and changing problematic bulbs to address lighting issues at stations; and

  • Addressing leakage issues at some 93 locations (repairs at 21 locations in LRT and MRT stations have been completed), with the remaining repairs to be carried out in stages and completed by June 2023.

Rapid Rail also stressed that 99 percent of the elevators at the LRT and MRT stations are operational, adding that maintenance is always carried out periodically to ensure that the facilities provided are in good working order.

It also noted that the monorail stations were not originally designed to have elevator facilities.

"Realising the needs of users, especially the elderly and the disabled, Prasarana Malaysia Bhd has taken the initiative to add 18 units of lifts and 39 units of ‘wheelchair platform lifts’ for the comfort of the public.

"The work to upgrade the facilities on the monorail requires structural improvements and safety issues that need to be addressed.

"The upgrade project will start in the first quarter of 2023 and will take 18 months to complete," it said.
