Sarawak DAP chairperson Chong Chieng Jen revealed that “certain parties” have requested the chapter’s exclusion from Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government.
In a statement, Chong (above) said that the prime minister had relayed this to him yesterday, prior to the latter’s live telecast announcing deputy ministers in the government.
“I am thankful to the prime minister who contacted me last night before the announcement, explaining the delicate situation of the present political landscape and requests made by some quarters for the exclusion of Sarawak DAP MPs from the posts.
“We understand that under the present circumstances, national interest in terms of political stability and a stable government rises above all personal interest and positions,” he said.
However, Chong maintained that DAP’s support towards Anwar as prime minister was unconditional - as related by party secretary-general Anthony Loke last week.
“We accept whatever arrangement that the prime minister makes for a more stable government.
“We strongly believe that with Pakatan Harapan as the backbone of the present government - the administration will move away from the old days of corruption and cronyism.
“Those who have been accustomed to the old BN’s way of running the government will have to change to be more accountable,” Chong added.
Chong urged party members and supporters to not be disappointed and dismayed about Sarawak DAP’s predicament, assuring that the chapter will continue to play its role as a backbencher effectively and be the voice for the people of Sarawak.

“We will do our best to provide the necessary check and balances in Parliament and ensure that the principles of transparency, accountability and good governance are complied with by the ministries and government agencies,” he said.
Meanwhile, Muar MP Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman said he respected the prime minister’s decision to not include Muda in his cabinet.
In a video posted on his social media, the Muda president said that the decision was a blessing in disguise as it prevented the party from being separated from the rakyat.
“It gives us the space and bigger opportunities to bring the rakyat’s voice in and out of Parliament.
“There is no wall of power that will separate Muda from the rakyat,” he stated.
The former youth and sports minister added that the decision would also allow him to focus on serving and developing his constituency - as well as his ongoing trial.
Syed Saddiq, who is also a former Bersatu youth chief, was ordered in October to enter his defence in four criminal charges linked to RM1.12 million of party funds.
The hearing dates are Feb 22 to 24, March 13 and 14, as well as April 10 to 14 next year. - Mkini
