Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant resumes operations

Water tankers have been distributing water to affected residents.

PETALING JAYA: The Sungai Semenyih water treatment plant resumed operations after Air Selangor recorded a scale of zero threshold odour number, three times in a row.“The resumption involves the cleaning and water treatment processes, which are estimated to be completed in 12 hours.

“Following this, clean and safe treated water will then be distributed in stages to consumers in the affected areas,” Air Selangor said in a statement published on social media.

Air Selangor, however, has not given an update on the Bukit Tampoi water treatment plant, which was also shut down yesterday.

Yesterday, Air Selangor shut down both water treatment plants, affecting water supply to 472 areas in five regions, namely Petaling (172 areas), Hulu Langat (54 areas), Sepang (196 areas), Putrajaya (23 areas) and Kuala Langat (27 areas).

The odour pollution was caused by a liquid spill due to an accident involving a 20-tonne container lorry carrying perfume essence.

The crash occurred at Km44.1 northbound of the North-South Expressway Central Link (Elite) near Bandar Serenia, Negeri Sembilan.

The crash site was 6.4km from the Semenyih treatment plant and 18km from the Bukit Tampoi plant.

Bags of activated carbon were placed in Sungai Limau Manis to reduce the odour in the river. This river later flows into Sungai Semenyih, which feeds the water treatment plants. - FMT
