Rafizi denies telling public to stop buying chicken

Economic affairs minister Rafizi Ramli says ‘intelligent’ members of the public would understand his viewpoints.

PETALING JAYA: Economic affairs minister Rafizi Ramli has denied claims that he had advised people to stop buying items like chicken to help curb price hikes brought on by inflation.

This follows the brickbats he received after he was quoted as saying at a press conference that “by right, when the price of chicken goes up, people should avoid buying chicken”.

On Twitter, the PKR deputy president said his focus was on having “price elasticity” as a mechanism to control the cost of goods.

“I was talking about the need to address the supply and demand side so that a more elastic consumer demand becomes a force to reckon with in influencing the price of goods,” said Rafizi.

He said he was open to criticism and that “intelligent” members of the public would understand his viewpoints when arguments are presented.

“In a month, the Perikatan Nasional leaders arguing on this topic now will be silenced.

“This is just like when they had other issues which started out as being controversial. When these matters were explained, intelligent members of the rakyat began to understand them better.”

Rafizi said that he had never “run away” from controversial discussions if it meant that facing them could solve problems, citing other controversies he had faced before.

He cited the time Pakatan Harapan (PH) followers had criticised him when he was outspoken about former PKR deputy president Azmin Ali in 2016.

Last March, Rafizi was also slammed for sharing his opinion that PH would need to win more than 80 seats to become the largest bloc after the general election.

“Don’t be afraid of public opinion. God willing, rational people will understand the issue better and follow suit later.” - FMT
