KEPALA BATAS: A water theme park in Bertam here, which opened its doors to the public in the middle of this month, was instructed to close for operating without licence.

The Seberang Perai City Council (MBSP) issued the order through a notice today.

A MBSP spokesman, in a statement, said the council's licensing department started carrying out inspections on the water theme park since Dec 16.

"Checks showed the operator of the premise committed an offence for operating without licence from MBSP.

"A compound offer as well as a notice for the premises to cease its operation within a period of seven days were issued against the operator of the water theme park," the spokesman said, adding that the compound offer and closure notice were received by a representative of the operator of the theme park.

Six days later, the council conducted another round of inspection and found that the premises was still operating without entertainment licence for water theme park activities.

"A notice was issued against the operator of the premises to stop any form of water theme park activities within a period of three days under the Entertainment Control and Places of Entertainment Enactment 1998," the spokesman said.

The spokesman claimed the operator of the water theme park defied the order issued by MBSP when checks conducted at 4.30pm yesterday showed the premises was still operating.

"The city council proceeded with action to stop operation of the water theme park at 9.30am today (Dec 28)," the spokesman said.

A clip went viral on the several social media platforms on the closure of the water theme park.

The clip also showed several people who had come together with their families wanting to spend the school holidays at the theme park were disappointed to find the premises closed.

Some social media users supported the action by the local authorities as they were concerned about the safety of visitors coming to the theme park. - NST
