49 data scientists certified

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) has achieved certification of a total of 49 data scientists to date, said chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahidin.

"These data scientists possess essential skills in areas such as statistics, data curation, advanced analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, enabling DOSM to enhance its capacity in providing comprehensive and accurate data-driven policy inputs," he said in a statement today.

Uzir (above) said DOSM had enrolled its 30 officers to undergo the SAS-Certified Data Scientist programme from Oct 2022 to March 2023, and previously, 19 data scientists had undergone the same rigorous programme in 2018 and 2021.

The SAS-Certified Data Scientists programme represents a continuous effort towards enhancing the capacity of data scientists and enabling the full utilisation of data science applications in producing official statistics.

"The certification of data scientists is a pivotal step to deal with rapid technological change, industry demand and the industrial revolution," he said.

DOSM is currently undertaking several related projects in big data analytics including the Statistics Big Data Analytics, Statistics Data Warehouse, Malaysia Integrated Population Census System, Social Protection Database, and Labour Market Information and Analytics Platform.
