SHAH ALAM: Amazon Web Services (AWS) only finalised its decision to set up infrastructure in Malaysia following the 15th General Election (GE15), says Fahmi Fadzil.
The Communications and Digital Minister said talks (on the investment) had, however, been long ongoing, and that the decision showed investors’ confidence in the stability of the current Malaysian government.
“International Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz told the Cabinet that AWS had long considered this prospect but the decision was only made following the conclusion of GE15.
“This was a signal that investors were confident of the government’s stability.
“If someone wants to invest in such a big amount, they would only do so if a government is stable hence there’s no need to believe anyone saying they were scheming to overthrow the government,” he said at a question and answer session during a town hall here on Monday (March 6).
On March 2, AWS announced that it would be launching a new infrastructure region in Malaysia as part of a public-private partnership with the Malaysian government.
The announcement also came with AWS confirming that it intends to invest at least RM25.5bil in the country by 2037 through the setting up of the infrastructure. - Star
